The great thing about this challenge was that we had to ‘funk’ things up without losing sight of the big picture – however we made it look, it still had to function as a canteen.
The best way to start was to... start again – the place was gutted, re-painted (bright blue and orange), with new kitchen and serving area. Much to the relief of staff and students, we replaced the self-serve coffee dispenser with an espresso machine operated by new barrister staff. We also introduced fresh, healthy ‘grab and go’ food options (prepared at the canteen) for everyone to enjoy.
We even named it the Hungry Brain.
A bland venue is now more colourful and palatable. (It is also more profitable).
